The College of Science acknowledges that academic advising is a critical component of higher education and academic advisors often do not receive the recognition they deserve.  This is why we established the Outstanding Academic Advisor Awards for two categories, faculty and professional academic advisors in Spring 2021.

Nominees for this award are not nominated by colleagues, administrators, nor their supervisors. But, by the individuals who gain the most from advising experiences. That's right. Students nominate their academic advisors for this award!

Students show their appreciation for their academic advisor by nominating them if they display any or all of the characteristics below:

  1. Demonstrates a caring and helpful attitude
  2. Delivers accurate information regarding program requirements including General Education
  3. Provides insight for semester and career planning
  4. Informs you of university resources available
  5. Knowledgeable of Virginia Tech regulations, policies, and procedures
  6. Supports student development through academic, social, and professional engagement
  7. Monitors your progress towards graduation
