Geoscientist Patricia M. Dove receives top scientific honor
Patricia M. Dove, C.P. Miles Professor of Science in the Department of Geosciences in the College of Science, has been elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) for her sustained excellence in original scientific research. Membership in the NAS is one of the highest honors given to a scientist in the United States. Dove will be inducted into the Academy next April during its 150th annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Bill Woodall receives prestigious Box Medal
The European Network of Industrial and Business Statistics will award
Bill Woodall of Blacksburg, Va., professor of
statistics in the
College of Science at Virginia Tech, the Box Medal at this year’s annual congress in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in September. Woodall received a Ph.D. in statistics from Virginia Tech in 1980. (

Oak Ridge Associated Universities has selected
Amanda Morris, a Virginia Tech scientist investigating sustainable energy, for a 2012 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award. The unrestricted grant is for faculty members in the first two years of their tenure track. Morris, an assistant professor in the
Department of Chemistry, is searching for ways to harness energy from the sun in an easier, more efficient, less expensive method than currently available. (

COS Diversity Award 2011-12
The College of Science Diversity Award which was presented to
Felicia Etzkorn, professor of chemistry whose efforts benefitted students from under-represented minorities as well as economically and geographically disadvantaged backgrounds and women in fields where they are under-represented. Etzkorn has also made a positive impact in recruiting under-represented faculty and women to Chemistry and other departments and colleges within Virginia Tech.
