Department Head and Professor of Economics

Virginia Tech seeks an accomplished, visionary head for its department of Economics. Virginia Tech has an emphasis on interdisciplinary research; its faculty have been involved in collaborations across a number of disciplines within the university, nationally and globally. The department is located in the College of Science and consists of 14 faculty, 6 instructors and 25 Ph.D. students. The Ph.D. is offered jointly with the Agricultural and Applied Economics Department (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences). We have approximately 450 undergraduate majors divided between science- and business-based undergraduate programs.

Responsibilities of the Department Head include leadership of all department programs and administrative responsibility for visioning, planning, fiscal management and human resources. This includes facilitating success in obtaining external funding as well as recruitment, development, and retention of faculty and staff. Desired qualifications include: 1) evidence of visionary leadership in supporting and promoting excellence in teaching, research, and extension, 2) academic record and internationally recognized level of professional achievement, commensurate with a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor at Virginia Tech, 3) a record of effective mentoring and management of personnel and financial resources, 4) an earned doctorate, and 5) demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations and colleagues.
