Statement from the Dean

Welcome! You have discovered the web pages of the Virginia Tech College of Science, home of 9 departments and programs. The expansiveness of the college, combined with the smaller, more defined departments and program areas, gives students the advantages of a large university plus the feel of smaller communities in which students can get to know their fellow scholars, take part in departmental organizations, and become acquainted with their professors.

The main advantage of a large university and a college the size of Virginia Tech's College of Science, is that a student's education can be broad and will prepare him or her for the changes that many people make in their careers over a lifetime. Not many people stay in their first careers forever, and a well-rounded education will provide the skills necessary not only for the original plans but for the changes that life brings. Many of our courses are cross disciplinary, drawing knowledge and expertise from several departments to give students the full picture of a situation or subject. Cooperation and collaboration among faculty and students in different disciplines enable students to tailor their education to their varied interests and needs. Another advantage of a large research college is that students sometimes are able to do research, as undergraduates, with professors who are well known in that field of study.

We invite you to browse through our college's many departments and programs and meet some of the people on their web pages. If we pique your interest, send for more information in the field of your choice.

Again, welcome to the College of Science at Virginia Tech!
